4 WAYS TO CONTROL YOUR LEGAL COSTS*
|
1. Get Organized: The more organized the client is, the more economical the case
tends to be. Before your first interview with Mr. Reich, take time to think about your case.
Think about what your goals are, some questions you would like to have him answer or any
other issues or concerns. Mr. Reich will send you home with some questionnaires to fill out to
start the process of gathering the needed information for your case. Be sure to get this
information back to him with all the requested documents in order to process you case
efficiently and effectively. This will cut down on the time that he will have to spend
requesting, investigating and gathering materials. It is a good idea to start getting organized
even before your first meeting with your attorney. Start collecting items like:
- Previous 3 years of Tax Returns and W-2's
- Copies of all financial records such as savings and checking account
statements, stock portfolios statements, 401(k) statements, retirement
information, etc.
- Proof of separate property
- Ownership documentation of assets such as residence, land, vehicles,
boats, etc.
- All documents and statements on debt
- Any other court orders pertaining to the dissolution
3. Be Thorough: Tell Mr. Reich all the facts. During your interviews with Mr. Reich, he will help guide you to share
information that is relevant to your case but you must be thorough and honest about the facts. It can be difficult to discuss
information that you are not proud of but it helps him advise you more effectively if he knows the truth. An attorney-client
relationship is best achieved when the attorney has all the information needed to promote the goals and protect the rights of the
client. All the information that you share with him and his staff will be kept in strict confidence. In order to represent you effectively
and efficiently, it will help him to know as much as possible about your case in order to avoid surprises during the course of the
representation.
2. Communicate: You need to discuss important information about your case with your attorney and prepare for meetings.
More often than not, you will be the main source of information about your case. If something new happens regarding your case,
you should inform Mr. Reich as soon as possible. It may change the course of your case and it will save him some time and thus
you some money to stay headed on the right track.
4. Watch the Clock: Try to discuss only relevant case matters with your attorney. Most interactions you have with
attorney's and their staff will be charged for at an hourly rate. Although a friendly relationship can facilitate the handling of your
case, you should try to limit the discussions to your legal matter in order to control your legal costs. There will be times when you
need to communicate information about your case and talking to his staff will suffice, as opposed to the attorney, and will help
save you money.
